Bathroom Tiles FAQs

What types of tiles make good bathroom tiles?

Bathrooms are some of the most frequently used areas of a home. Additionally, they are commonly subjected to wet or moist conditions. As such, good tiles for bathroom use are those with high durability and water resistance such as a porcelain tile.

Additionally, bathroom floor tiles should have a good anti-slip rating as they will be frequently used whilst wet.

Should bathroom floor tiles be anti-slip?

Yes, definitely. As you'll frequently be standing on bathroom floor tiles whilst wet, it is always a good idea to have a strong anti-slip rating for bathroom floor tiles. A Pendulum Slip Rating of P4-P5 is generally suitable for this purpose, similar to outdoor tiles, pool surrounds, and slightly higher than tiles for kitchen use.

What is the difference between bathroom floor tiles and bathroom wall tiles?

Tiles for bathroom floors typically need to be more durable and have level of anti-slip rating (P4/P5 is good). Porcelain tiles are often used for the floors of bathroom areas.

Wall tiles for bathrooms don't need to be as quite as durable or impact resistant as bathroom floor tiles, however, some level of moisture resistance is good. Ceramic tiles are often a good choice for bathroom walls as they still have a good level of durability but at a slightly better price point. Other great options for bathroom wall tiles are patterned and feature tiles or mosaic tiles to create visual interest.

How does the tile slip ratings work?

The standard for tile slip ratings in Australia is the Pendulum Slip Test. This provides a rating from P1 (high slip risk) to P5 (low slip risk). A slip rating of P4 or P5 is preferred for bathroom floor tiles.
