What types of tiles make good kitchen tiles?

The kitchen is one of the most frequently used areas of a home. As such, good tiles for kitchen use, are those with high durability such as a porcelain tile. This is especially the case for kitchen floor tiles, whereas more affordable ceramic tiles can be used for kitchen wall tiles, such as for splashbacks where less durability is necessary.

Should kitchen floor tiles be anti-slip?

Due to the potential risk of food and liquid spills in a kitchen, it is always a good idea to have a degree of anti-slip for kitchen floor tiles. A Pendulum Slip Rating of P2-P3 is typically suitable for this purpose as opposed to higher ratings ideal for outdoor tiles, pool surrounds or wet bathroom areas.

What is the difference between kitchen floor tiles and kitchen wall tiles?

Tiles for kitchen floors typically need to be more durable and have level of anti-slip rating (P2/P3 is good). Porcelain tiles are an excellent choice for high traffic areas such as the kitchen.

Wall tiles for kitchens don't need to be as durable or impact resistant as kitchen floor tiles. Ceramic tiles are often a good choice for kitchen walls and splashbacks as they still have a good level of durability but at a slightly better price point. Similarly, glass tiles can make great splashbacks and are easy to clean. Other great options for kitchen splashbacks are patterned and feature tiles or mosaic tiles.

How does the tile slip ratings work?

The standard for tile slip ratings in Australia is the Pendulum Slip Test. This provides a rating from P1 (high slip risk) to P5 (low slip risk). A slip rating of P2 or P3 is preferred for kitchen floor tiles.
