Collection: Subway Tiles
Subway tiles are a popular style for kitchen splashbacks and bathrooms. They derive their name from the very first subway tiles installed in New York train stations in 1904.
The traditional shape of this style is rectangular tiles with a 2 x 1 proportion. More recently, though, the name has expanded to a greater range of tiles so long as they have generally long and thin proportions. These also include arrow tiles.
Subway tiles are typically either ceramic or porcelain, and can come in a range of finishes including glass, matte or textured.

Subway Tiles FAQs
What are Subway tiles?
Subway tiles are rectangular tiles that originated in the early 1900s and remain one of the most popular tile styles today. Their clean lines and timeless appearance make them suitable for kitchens, bathrooms,
laundries, splashbacks, and feature walls.
What other names do subway tiles have?
Subway tiles are also sometimes known as metro tiles (due to their historical origin) or brick tiles (due to their shape). Although the names vary, they generally describe the same tile format.
Where can subway tiles be used?
Subway tiles can be used on kitchen splashbacks, bathroom walls, shower walls, laundries, powder rooms, fireplaces, feature walls, and commercial interiors. Many porcelain subway tiles are also suitable for floor applications where specified by the manufacturer.
What sizes do subway tiles come in?
While the traditional subway tile measures approximately 75 × 150mm (3" × 6"), modern subway tiles are available in many sizes, including longer, wider, and large-format options. This allows greater flexibility when creating contemporary or classic designs.
What is the best layout pattern for subway tiles?
Subway tiles can be installed in a variety of patterns, including traditional brick bond, stacked, vertical stack, herringbone, basketweave, and diagonal layouts. The best pattern depends on the style of the space and the visual effect you want to achieve.
Can subway tiles be laid vertically?
Yes. Vertical subway tile layouts have become increasingly popular in contemporary interiors. Installing subway tiles vertically can create the illusion of higher ceilings while adding a fresh, modern look.
What materials are subway tiles made from?
Are subway tiles suitable for bathrooms?
Yes. Subway tiles are an excellent choice for bathrooms due to their durability, moisture resistance, and timeless appeal. They are commonly used on shower walls, vanity splashbacks, bath surrounds, and full-height feature walls.
Are subway tiles available in different finishes?
Yes. Subway-style tiles are available in gloss, matt, satin, handmade-look, bevelled, and flat finishes, or even as textured and 3D tiles. Each finish creates a different visual effect and can suit different interior styles.
Can subway tiles be used for commercial tiling projects?
Absolutely. Subway tiles are widely used in cafés, restaurants, hotels, offices, retail stores, and hospitality venues because they combine durability with a clean, professional appearance.
